How to Stop Striving for Perfection and Embrace the Beautiful Mess

Amy Gardner / May 15, 2025

We live in a world obsessed with striving for perfection. Curated Instagram feeds, productivity hacks, and endless “how-to” lists all whisper the same message: Do more, be better, aim higher. But here’s the truth no one tells you loudly enough—perfection is a myth. And worse, chasing it can rob you of joy, creativity, and peace.

The High Cost of Perfectionism

Striving for perfection might feel like ambition, but often it’s anxiety in disguise. As a result, this journey toward “perfect” can lead to:

  • Procrastination – because if it can’t be done perfectly, why start?
  • Burnout – because nothing ever feels “good enough.”
  • Paralysis – because fear of failure keeps you stuck.

In other words, perfectionism doesn’t just hold you back—it steals the chance to learn, grow, and enjoy the process.

What if “Messy” Is Exactly Right?

The truth is, most of life is beautifully imperfect. Or, in the words of Glennon Doyle Melton, “brutiful”.  Unexpected things happen, homes get cluttered, life can be chaotic, healing from an eating disorder or any other illness is nonlinear, and even the best relationships get messy. The mess isn’t failure—it’s real life. And it’s where connection, growth, and authenticity live.

Embracing the mess means giving yourself permission to:

  • Show up imperfectly
  • Make mistakes (and learn from them)
  • Be vulnerable
  • Live fully in the moment

How to Let Go of Perfection (Without Losing Your Standards)

Letting go of perfection doesn’t mean giving up or settling. It means shifting your mindset:

1. Reframe Mistakes as Data

Instead of seeing errors as failures, treat them as information. Ask, What did this teach me? Every misstep is part of the learning curve.

2. Set Progress-Based Goals

Aim for better, not perfect. When setting goals, focus on consistency over flawless execution. Small wins add up.

3. Celebrate the Process

Take joy in the doing, not just the outcome. Creativity, relationships, and growth are often nonlinear—and that’s okay.

4. Curate Your Inputs

Be mindful of who and what you’re comparing yourself to. Social media is often a highlight reel, not real life. Surround yourself with people who value authenticity.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

Would you talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself? Be kind. You’re learning, trying, evolving—and that’s more than enough.

Your Life Doesn’t Need a Filter

Your story isn’t meant to be perfect—it’s meant to be real. The messy parts? They’re often where the magic happens. So let go of the pressure to have it all figured out. Show up as you are. Embrace the unfinished, the uncertain, the imperfect.

Because maybe, just maybe, that’s where your truest self lives.

Don’t forget: Perfection is rigid. Life is fluid. Choose life. Choose the mess. It’s more beautiful than you think.
